Prepping for Winter

07 May

We are getting ready for winter by chunking up some trees from a recent area cutdown..

..and also a blackfly invasion..it is hard to see in the shot but jango is surrounded by blackflies. I cannot abide the 3 weeks which is blackfly season so A* and I wear nets..hotter to wear but I would rather sweat than be constantly swatting.

..and now 1/2 chunked and stacked..we set up another stack area in the ‘money in the bank’ area of the homestead.

..with the heat and the flies I sort of wished I had finished off this job last month. Ah well..great to be outside sweating..beats freezing!

ugh. we were out in the yard working today and jambaloney said the dreaded, awful words – “i think i just saw a blackfly. yep, that was a blackfly!”. i promptly fell on my knees waving my arms above my head, crying “nooooooooooooooooooooooooo!”. ugh. i hate those things. we have bug suits, too, but i hate those things as well. oh, and a tip – if you get alot of bites take a benadryl. the benadryl will make you less itchy and cranky – not sure why it works, i am sure there is some medical reason that i haven’t bothered to look into – but jambaloney’s mom gave us each a benadryl last year when we had been eaten alive and it really worked.

we have tried rubbing orange peels, garlic and spraying ourselves down in vinegar – nothing has worked so far. i don’t like deet and stuff like that but i might just break down this year … i hope not. but honest to goodness those things can you drive you right off the deep end!

good job on the money in the bank! your friend,

..I hate the nets too but it is the lesser of 2 evils..and the net cannot fly around and buzz. hehe. Yeah, I am not too bad with itching when bit but A* gets rashes and such so she is more diligent…my grandmother also dealt with bites by applying boiling water via a face-cloth. After that you learned to stop complaining!

dude – i applaud you prtepping and all, but it’s may – the word winter sends chills up my spine ;-)))

friggin’ blackfies – i had forgotten about them ’til this AM – netting may be teh word of the week, beats getting sick from too many bites.

our cats hate them too and sometimes get bit too much… watchng the squirrels deal with them is like watching meth heads bathe!!

hope your season is short – 3 weeks will be aweful but tolerable.. last year they stuck around here for 4 months!!

    cheers pal!!

hehe..well the wood has got to go somewhere! hehe..looks like we will have 2 years worth when averythign is cut too..sweet! Yeah Jango ( especially ) gets attacked constantly..and after a couple minutes outside tryign to deal with them he is trying to get back inside…they don’t seem to bother loki but then again you actually have to sit still..and that is something loki never does outside! take care!

I am jealous of your wood stock. Awesome! I hope black fly season ends soon for you. I would be wearing a net too. The mosquitoes having starting biting here the last couple of days.
