there are many colors…

..in this off-grid rainbow.!

..I just flew to my house to see this rainbow..andboy are my arms tired..groan..

A* and I were driving home from work..or she was picking me up after I got off the bus. Anyway, when I was on the bus I had seen a brilliant double rainbow..if a double rainbow is 2 rainbow then I saw a double rainbow. If not then I just saw 2 rainbows. That is not what this post about..but the earlier rainbows were an example of foreshadowing within this post. Stay tuned. So, as we drive to our place I notice a rainbow in the general vacinity of our place..as we get closer and closer I notice that it is almost as if the rainbow were ending at our house. Took a couple minutes of video and grabbed some screen captures of the rainbow and A*.

..holy rainbow Batman!..The rainbow ends at my house! In the woods!Yee-haa...rainbow!..TOUCHDOWN! Yee-haa...Rainbows go up by a field goal!

When we got back to our place I spent an hour looking for a pot of gold but the only thing I could find that was hidden was 3 empty beer bottles worth 39 cents and one of the dogs toys I had lost a year ago..worth $7. I was expecting a pot of gold so needless to say I won’t be investing in any rainbow schemes in the future…stick with silver for investing folks…I wish it were a silver rainbow..or even a beer rainbow. My father always told me to ‘beware leprechans and thier fancy ranbows’..now I know what he was talking about..at least the rainbow could have talked to the tooth fairy and left me a tooth with a gold filling or something..jeeze. I guess it is Friday so being home for the weekend is like finding a pot of gold..fools gold…at least the way I do it.

Perseid Meteor Shower

roughly where to find the Perseids..

3 Night of Showers…I must really stink…oh, meteor showers.

..well for the last 3 days we have had Perseid meteor showers. They peaked on night 2 and I have been out during the middle of the night watching them. Since we are off-grid we have no outside lights..and being .5miles from my nearest neighbor light pollution is not a problem as long as you are not looking in the direction of the city 30KM away. The nights have been moonless and clear so it has been a perfect chance to view..the best time is usually 2-5AM so I have been going to bed earlier and setting my alarm to wake up and watch for 2-3 hours before I head back to bed so I have proper rest before work. This is one of the more active metero showers of the year and its in a warm time of year so I like to get out to watch them..they are easy to see with the naked eye and all you need to do is find a comfortable place to lay down and a pillow and blanket to keep you warm. My actual lot has many trees so I like to watch from a clearing 1/2 way down my driveway..I set up a cot in the back of my truck, grab a pillow and sleeping bag and lay there watching the meteor shower. Diring some meteor showers you can see as many as 40-50 meteors.

..get out next year and take a look!

Night 1: I go down alone and watch for 3 hours. I think I recorded around 60 meteors..some of them very bright but most were not. So quiet and dark..amazing. I also got 2-3 ‘wake-up-calls’ from the local bats..since I am mostly covered I only have my face exposed and 2-3 times a bat fluttered within 6 inches of my face…the first time it happend I nearly had a heart attack. I use the truck so I don’t have to worry about something sneaking up on me and scaring me..I didn’t think bats would be an issue but after the 3rd time I began to look forward to it.

Night 2: A* joins me and I get up late..I don’t think I heard the alarm..being up all night last night has made me tired. Even when I go down I fall asleep within the hour..A* is no better at the best of times and eventually we both fall asleep outside in cots in the back of a truck. Mosquitos are not really out this time of night so it was not a big deal. We did see some meteors but it is not as many as the previous night.

Night 3: went out early and saw some but not many shooting stars. I stay out for an hour and only see 5-6 so I head back in.

the first night was amazing and I am looking forward to more chances to get out in the fall..Hopefully by that time I will get my binocular stand all done so I can use that at the same time..that would be nice. I really enjoy watcing meteor showers..especially when the conditions are right like over the past 3 days. I think that last year was more spectacular but what can you do!!
