3 Night of Showers…I must really stink…oh, meteor showers.
..well for the last 3 days we have had Perseid meteor showers. They peaked on night 2 and I have been out during the middle of the night watching them. Since we are off-grid we have no outside lights..and being .5miles from my nearest neighbor light pollution is not a problem as long as you are not looking in the direction of the city 30KM away. The nights have been moonless and clear so it has been a perfect chance to view..the best time is usually 2-5AM so I have been going to bed earlier and setting my alarm to wake up and watch for 2-3 hours before I head back to bed so I have proper rest before work. This is one of the more active metero showers of the year and its in a warm time of year so I like to get out to watch them..they are easy to see with the naked eye and all you need to do is find a comfortable place to lay down and a pillow and blanket to keep you warm. My actual lot has many trees so I like to watch from a clearing 1/2 way down my driveway..I set up a cot in the back of my truck, grab a pillow and sleeping bag and lay there watching the meteor shower. Diring some meteor showers you can see as many as 40-50 meteors.
Night 1: I go down alone and watch for 3 hours. I think I recorded around 60 meteors..some of them very bright but most were not. So quiet and dark..amazing. I also got 2-3 ‘wake-up-calls’ from the local bats..since I am mostly covered I only have my face exposed and 2-3 times a bat fluttered within 6 inches of my face…the first time it happend I nearly had a heart attack. I use the truck so I don’t have to worry about something sneaking up on me and scaring me..I didn’t think bats would be an issue but after the 3rd time I began to look forward to it.
Night 2: A* joins me and I get up late..I don’t think I heard the alarm..being up all night last night has made me tired. Even when I go down I fall asleep within the hour..A* is no better at the best of times and eventually we both fall asleep outside in cots in the back of a truck. Mosquitos are not really out this time of night so it was not a big deal. We did see some meteors but it is not as many as the previous night.
Night 3: went out early and saw some but not many shooting stars. I stay out for an hour and only see 5-6 so I head back in.
the first night was amazing and I am looking forward to more chances to get out in the fall..Hopefully by that time I will get my binocular stand all done so I can use that at the same time..that would be nice. I really enjoy watcing meteor showers..especially when the conditions are right like over the past 3 days. I think that last year was more spectacular but what can you do!!
