Frosty the Poop

Not sure what animal left a snowman impression in the woods..too far off the beaten path for a dog. Maybe a bear who had too much pepperoni? imageThe second is from deer. Someone in the near vacinity mentined they saw a bear track but I could not find any. When we were out in the atv’s yesterday fishing with friends I thought I did see some bear scat but it was very different..no camera which is good since at one point during the expedition we were swimming with a half floating atv. Refreshing. I lost my rod too for good measure…it seemed like the right thing to do when I was upside-down and underwater.

Toad eggs hatch

Went out fishing with some friends today..but before I left I took some shots of thr toad strings..that is them hanging all over the branches..like deflated balloons. The toads seem to be doing fine. Also got a shot of swarming backflies..they are the black blurs..then it was on to fishing. No fish caught..but I did manage to catch 15  black fly bites on my hands..no pictures from fishing..left the media home and good thing..we flipped the atv in waist high water when we were traversing through the woods on ‘trails’ that you needed a vivid imagination to follow.  A sunburn was added to the days activities too..icing on the cake. It was good to get to know some local trails and lakes better.

Solar Oven Cooking with a Sun Oven

Loving gadgets the way that I do I just got a new toy in the mail ( 3 years ago..but posts always seem better when they are fresh..like bread )..it is a solar oven by a company called Sun Oven. How does it work you ask? Simple really…you buy it, unwrap it..then unfold the reflecting panels. Then point it at the sun when the sun is out. In the back there is a mechanism to raise or lower the angle of the box..less angle in summer..more of an angle in winter. It is super insulated and holds the heat generated by the reflectors..then cooks your food.

So, to use:

  • place in a sunny placeimage
  • unfold and adjust the back for optimal sunimage
    image

    • let heat up.

    image

    • add in ‘foo’..if it is chicken or meat it really helps to cube it up
    • when you add it..make sure it is in a thin metal black container..the heat will transfer and the black aids in absorbing more heat ( in this example I am using the sun oven to bake some eggshells so the chickens can eat them.

  •  allow to cook..give it more time than ususual..nothing will burn
  • take out and eat ( in this example you should not eat these chicken egg shells…they taste gross..even after I baked them..too crunchy )

We originally started with some cubed chicken with rice and have moved on to cook almost anything in it since we bought it 3 years ago..no cookies yet but I have read some recipes..the only difference between this oven and a regular oven is that it takes longer to cook..and you need full sun. It also works in the dead of winter..as long as there is sun the temperature will be hot enough to cook MANY things..You can make them fairly easily too…the directions are on the net. try google..they help find things. For us it is mostly a summer tool as we use our cookstove all winter ( with some fall and spring thrown in for good measure )..the technology and cooking time for both the sun oven and cookstove are very close and after 3 years we are pretty good at cooking with it when we want to bake. One of my favorite things about this Sun Oven is that I prepare my supper at lunch time, put it in the sun then open up the sun oven at supper and everything is ready and hot..not to mention moist and occasionally delicious..there are also techniques I employ for more time sensitive cooking where I put the sun oven in a shaded area that I know will get sun mid-afternoon..so when the sun starts hitting the sun oven it starts cooking…cooked to perfection.

..cooking some spuds to go with supper on the weekend.

Sometimes the moisture can cause the sun over to cool off ( as the condensation covers the glass ) so in instances like the picture above I occasionally open it up and give it a wipe..be careful when you open it up..it’s HOT!

Never worry about the power going out and having no warm food or drinking water..the Sun Oven also comes with a little gadget that you can put in water..heat it up to make it drinkable and the gadget lets you know when it is safe..I would have a picture of that too but I lost it…anyway..a great purchase for around $200.

Hummingbirds need FOOD

Walking around the yard yesterday I heard some strange chirping..then I noticed flying greased lightning

It has been SO cold around here that I assumed that the hummingbirds were still vacationing in sunny Florida! ..the problem was that I had no nectar..thank Dog I knew of a place where they had this info..the series of tubes called the interweb. Turns out I was wasting money buying nectar mix..all you need is 4 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar..boil to kill off clorine and other nasty stuff..allow to cool down then serve it in a hummingbird feeder with a slice of lime as a garnish. Ok, no lime on the side..an old bartending trick to make drinks look better..hehe. I put it out but got no visits..today when I walked outside I scared 2 away..they appear to love it..I was a little worried because last year they would not use this feeder no matter what I did..maybe the vacation over their winter made them more tolerant to feeders that are not shaped like flowers.

Slow progress

Why has the sun forsaken us? The last 2 years we have been well into spinach..it is around 1.5 inches at this point..stalled I assume from lack of sun, heat or love. Spring is usually the season for fresh salads..this year we have just been drinking a bowl full of water as a subsitute..this rain could drive a man to drink…so that is what the plan is while the Bruins game is on. I’ll show you rain..its fargin war. If it does not stop raining by Saturday I am going to take the law into my own hands and use my bow and arrows to shoot a rain cloud in the hopes of vanquishing the rain.

Tree trimming before and after…

I am no arborist..and I am no Alvin Einstein either..yes I know that is wrong..it’s a joke. Anyway..we wanted the tree between the shed and copped trimmed up..I erred on the side of caution and trimmed way back..the tops and furthest out branches to encourage bushiness and not height. We will se how it looks when the leaves come in..so by December at this rate. The pictures are fairly terrible making the actual trimmed branches hard to detect. I can do better.

Toadageddon

It appears that my driveway is about to be taken over by a horde of toads…or at least a couple hundred. I don’t know what of kind of Generals they have running this offensive but it seems sort of silly of them to lay in a puddle that is driven over daily..I moved them to a safe pond nearby and I really hope that weighs in my favor if the toads ever win in thier quest to take over my driveway.

I have never actually seen toad eggs before..apparently they are only in the water for a couple of days before the tadpoles emerge. Long strings of eggs…they were easily moved into a bucket even though the lenght must have been 5 feet long in total…I can’t imagine the size the moma toad was.
