Vacation Season

image

We’ve doubled down on dawgs..some of our friends and family are away down south so we get to dog-sit. Around the house reading and the dogs kept barking at a noise that sounded like someone knocking on a distant door..so we went out to investigate..

image

(..and talk abot copying posts..shim farm had this earlier in the week )..turned out to be a Pleated-Woodpecker. He was flitting from dead tree to dead tree and spending 5 minutes ravaging each. Those guys are BIG..and powerful..2-3 times the size of a regular woodpecker. I had seen one fly over last summer but this was the first chance I got to see one in action. Amazing but it would not let me get close enough for a shot with my camera/phone.

..and I was taking a look at the deer-hunting stand..needs work ( and I need to close it off my todo list before winter ends) but it was a little too icy and slippery to be up that high..so it will have to wait for a warmer day!

Thank You Inconsistant Weather…

Mild. Freezing. Rain. Snow. Dirt is now mud and the hill on the driveway is a fraaking disaster. A mini-excavator has aslo been going through a couple of times a week whicj is not helping matters at all. So, thanks to all this we have April driveway conditions 2 months early. Yuuuck. We actually drove up this mess 2 days ago in our all-terrain hyundai accent..but I don’t want to push our luck and get stuck so we will park below the mudhole in the hopes of drying it out. Hopefully in a year or 2 this will be made into an actual driveway but for now we have to take our lumps and hump it up the last 200ft.image

..and out for a walk, someone has been using the ‘pistol valley’ sign on the loop as a shotgun target…why can’t they just shoot at grouse like everybody else around here is a mystery. The loop is also a sheet of ice which makes walking challenging…but it does make falling that much easier! Hehe

New Google Maps Progress

Looks like there has been some updating on google maps. This looks like it was taken a couple of months ago..like December based on the junk in the yard..no much so it must have been after we did all the trim work as the wood was stored out front and the pile was big enough it would have stood out. I need to dig up an old version of the overhead shot but it really is amazing the changes over the last 4 years. The red dots are our place and the other is the spot @ the stillwater where Loki broke through the ice last month..I was going to do a bunch of dotted places but then realized there were only 2 spots of importance. Even this map is now outdated as they have begun clearning and foundation work on 2 more properties on the road in! ( the road with the developed properties on it, the other ‘road’ is the old rough road we used for year 1..the road which houses the crevasses from posts last week! Hehe)

..we were the first dwelling on the road..development is encroaching

..I think I am standing in front..and you can sorta see the Canada flag on the shed..nice

A New Speed Record!

Wow, that is FAST…a new land-speed record on the homestead..5E/D. These hens might need more aerodynamic outfits if we hope to get up to 7 eggs per day speeds.image

Ah..feb slack-off is coming to an end..gotta get some stuff done before spring.

V-Day Homemade Pasta

Made another batch of pasta and this time I am putting up some after shots of a finished meal.
image

..there is supposed to be 2 meals here but A* would not stop eating it long enough to allow me to take a picture. NOw that I had a chance to have a larger sample ( last time I had one bite as it went quick at the Superbowl potluck)..and it was really good. Really!
image

image

..and I made a double batch so we also had noodles cut for lasagna..which also was totally tasty. 4 cups of flour, 6 eggs and salt..we streched that into 4 suppers for 2 and 1 lunch for 2..not bad…but I fear we are fighting a losing battle now that the chickens appear to be producing 4-5 eggs a day…looking like 2-3 cartons of eggs a week.

Snow and The Solar Panels

..sort of like Groundhog Day ( the movie that is) . Snow was followed by rain and we had an inch layer of ice on top of the panels blocking the ever important power prodution. I am not helping anything by not having the panels tilted for optimal winter sun collection so with this angle/panel setup the snow accumulates too much…but we have not really had much snow so I have not been putting my whole ass into making sure the panels are continually clean of snow…plus we are tentativly planning on installing our whole system in the summer..image

image

A broom, 1 water jug filled with well water and some soft scraping with my gloved hand..and 15 minutes later (with multiple soakings) the panels are clear, I have an empty water jug and soaked gloves..which promptly froze as I was wearing them in the -16c weather..literally 5 minutes after finishing I could no longer pick anything up due to stiff gloves…so back inside to do some chores.

image

..look outside 2 hours later and thanks to snow falling I get to do it all over again..deja vu all over again.

Battery Box Done!

One last sanity check before I do some final assemby of the sealed in battery box..will all 8 batteries fit in here?image NOPE!?..missed it by a 1/2 inch? Crud.

Had the vapor barrier ready to go in, stapler, tuct tape and some tire tube for an airtight seal all around the cover..so I guess I saved mysely and hour. Ah well, the dog perch project is back…and done too. The effort was going to happen anyway but I am a little saddened do to the fact we had big plans for the current battery storage area..ah well. The best laid plans of mice and men sometimes go awry….most of the time anyway, hehe.
