Brush Burn and Thieving Ravens

Getting ready for some more clearing of trees..but we had all the trees we cut down in the fall so we got to burning to make space. It was warm last week but after a couple of days of rain it was safe to burn..with fire we always err on the side of caution..especially when we are surrounded by trees:

It might be hard to tell ( besides the fire ) but here are some after shots:

..it really is amazing how a 2 hour burn can reduce a huge pile of brush down to a pile of ashes! You know what else is amazing..we had a daytime high of 28c 5 days ago..today the daytime high was -5c..and with the windchill it was -10c…shocking.

..and Ma hen also abandoned the eggs after 5 days..can’t blame her, it has been cold! We will try again in a couple of weeks…hen permitting. We had the abandoned eggs in a coffee can and forgot it outside and we awoke the next day to a 3 member raven crew taking turns flying down and snatching the eggs..which is fine as they were garbage..not that we want to encourage ravens to hang around. It was actually pretty neat watching them fly away with an egg in their beaks.

More Trail Decorations!

Now that the snow is all gone we get shot of some coyote skat dried up Loki rediscovered while out hiking the loop..looks like deer fur but this is as close as I want to get. I think I have covered coyote poop enough now too.

And some thoughtful people dropped a load of construction goods along our hiking route…I wonder what they are going to be building?….I am so excited!

Spring is arriving…?

..snow at this time of year last year and a high of 27c forecast for today( our old regional high has 10c in 1979 for today)…what the freek? Is this global warming or something out of the ordinary..if this keeps up there is going to be trouble..not here though cause it is usually a soggy disaster! hehe..Looking forward to the warm weather to dry up this muddy driveway of ours..it is starting to bounce back into shape now so another week and we should be able to drive all the way up again.

image

image
..everything is sprouting..I think it was May before the shrubs were starting to sprout last year..April last year was the worst..wet and no sun at all for literally 5 weeks.
image

image

image

..and we unwrapped the Japanese Maple..I HOPE we are done for heavy snowfall..but you never know. UNder the burlap was a drunken rabbit..too much sake!
image

..we don’t need 27c weather everyday..I would settle for an April with 6-7c and almost no rain..prime spinach weather!!

Curious chickens

..well we were away on vacation and when we returned we also returned to a broody hen. We also returned to the hens attempting to do their own version of a clown car with 3 hens in the laying box at one time because they only want to lay in 1 of the 5 boxes and with Ma taking up the space it tends to cramp things. So today we moved/dragged the nesting doghouse of shame up into the sunny area and set it up for a 3-4 week resident with fresh shavings, water and food ( but we still need some starter mash)
image

image

image

Of course..we move the doghouse up and the chickens all want a piece of the action..

image

image

With the extra hens laying we had no idea how long each egg has been incubating so we are going to wait 2 days, collect fresh eggs then give her a fresh batch to sit on. Ma is an old hat on the subject of nesting so we got her set up and within minutes she was in her old position on top of the eggs and pecking away at anyone who opens the back hatch..hopefully we will get better results this time..last year we were 0-10 in the early broody period and 1-8 in the summer brood…if we are successful we have another problem..what to do with all these chickens ( but lets not get ahead of ourselves..or count chickens until they hatch!)!

image

..and the white hen is ‘chickie’ the 1 chick that was hatched last summer..she is a super forager and will eat anything..mostly due to the fact that she and Ma foraged from the first day she was hatched…we are hoping for a hybrid of her and red as well as a couple of naked neck hybrids…you think this is an odd batch now just wait until they have gone through the genetic roulettle wheel again! hehe

In No Particular Order

..starting to feel better after 3 weeks of being sick and miserable. Away on vacation and some R and R was just what the doctor ordered!..nice to get away and visit A*s parents and family, catch a hockey game as well as eat excessive amounts of food, shop and get some kitchen ideas for our summer projects..but the best thing was getting better cause I was a disaster and was starting to think I would never get better..it was also a Christmas miracle we got everything into our luggage for the flight home! Hehe

Battery Bank Status

image

..I sometimes forget to do posts if I don’t take a picture of things…yeah, this is not a shot of the battery bank, sue me!

Last fall we were having some power issues and so I bought some gear to test the state of the batteries. When I tested them out they were all in an OK state…but hovering just at the edge of OK..I also learned more about my setup and how to optimize the charge based on system size. Out solar array is undersized (until we hook up the other 4 panels we have) for the size of the battery bank we have..so what we ended up doing was splitting the 8 batteries into 2 ‘banks’. One charges via solar and the other we trickle charge then occasionally switch them up so the other is active on solar charge..it has been working great to tell the truth..so less size = better overall performance. Now don’t get me wrong it also means less availible power but at least running lights and doing our day to day tasks has not been an issue. Come Spring I will put them all back on 1 bank but for now the bank runs as 2 independent systems to maximize charges and ensure that we get the batteries topped up when the sun is up. I don’t recommend this as a general practice but we are just trying to make these nearly dead batteries last as lomg as they can before we buy some more!
