slab table version 2

here is the newest version of the slab table we have been working on. I was working on the table top and after I was finished the second round of planing and sandind I thought I would see what it looked like…I took some of the brackets  that we bought at ikea and mounted them in a corner, placed the slab on top and leveled it off, attached the Ikea table leg (after twist adjusting the height) and secured it all..looks pretty good and we are happy with the semi-finished product..so far anyway. I am going to sand it again to get rid of some of the extra scrapes and dry areas then we pick some stain and we will be in the final stretch..and no more eating on the couch (but after it was up we had supper..and finished our meals on the couch before remembering we now had a corner table to eat on).

Garden Grows..

Man…there is some combination of starting a post on my phone and finishing it on a PC that is NOT SAVING MY POSTS AFTER I EDIT THEM..and it is driving me mad! I usually start a post on my phone by taking a picture then uploading them as a post..then I come back and edit them and add text…well there is an ongoing issue SOMEWHERE in the universe that is causing my write-ups to disappear into thin air…

..it makes me mad..anyway…here is the start of the garden..all of the usual suspects: lettuce, spinach, beans, basil, onions..and more to come when the transplants are ready next month. A couple of dog shots too..Jango was sitting by some flowers so I grabbed a shot and Loki stuck her nose into a picture I was taking of a daffodil.

..if my write-up gets deleted again I am gonna snap..or plant some snap peas.

Making More Perennials

..oops, posted this up accidentially..oh well. We took some of our ‘New Zealand Grass’ and split it into 2 additional plants and planted them in one of our beds from last fall..when this type of grass is on sale we are going to buy more of it..it looks great all season long.

image

image

..we might do some more splitting too with these 3: our near dead raspberry bushes rebounded back last year..nice ( with our full compost roller in the background..great for making compost tea!)

image

..split some of the flowers which A* dug up from her grandfathers yard

image

..and part of our rose bush from back at our old house. We planted this and basically forgot about it..I actually whippersnipped it to nothing on 2 occasions and it managed to bounce back and is now expanding outside of the original boundary.

image

..We like to have memories in the form of ‘plants from past habitations’..growing up we always had mountain ash, lilacs and black locust..(which I planted 2 of last week)..we also have some other plants that we want: Chinese Lanterns…and of course some fruit trees..but we are most of the way there for our initial plantings…and as a note this post was incomplete and after I published it accidentially there was no going back ..so there will be a part 2. hehe

Chunk Prep

image

We got our wood all ready to go before the weather turned..cleaned out the back of a very messy truck..a whole year of throwing whatever junk was around into the back of the truck..it was a mess.

image

image

And finally took 15 minutes and set up this puzzle of a compost bin..we have had it for 3 years and FINALLY set it up..our other compost roller is near jam packed with rich compost but it needed another week or 2 to sit and we did not want to add more in until it was done so my hand was forced and I needed to set it up! Hehe

..now there is something I have not seen in a while

..well it was warm enough that I wanted to go for a spin on the sunbleached (from last year mostly) motorcycle..but the first thing that A* and I needed to do was move the motorcycle out of the shed, take the battery off the trickle charge, install and reassemble the outside portions..basically the opposite of last fall. hehe..I guess that sort of makes sense.
image

Then out for a spin..started up like a charm. Filled up the tank and drove it through some dry trails and the road for around 1/2 hour..looks like my hour long bus ride ( each way ) to work is coming to an end!..but not too soon..in the past I used to start driving on April 1st..and many days I would scrape frost off the bike seat..and freeze my ass off on the way to work..actually after 10 minutes the dirve was not that bad..but that was usually due to losing the feeling in my face, legs and hands, hehe..not to mention year 1 ( before we had the driveway put in ) I would wear rubber boots everyday on the way out the old ‘road’..and for 2 weeks I got soakers everyday..yes the water holes were that deep and they basically don’t make a bigger street and trail motorcycle…hehe.

image

Change the old on the lightly used generator…
image

..then I get to the ‘thing I have not seen in a while..’ the floor of the shed!
image

In another month we will get A*’s scooter out and there will be all kinds of room!..or more.

It’s Time for Lyrids.

..the lyrids are about to peak tomorrow night so I thought I would pop on and let people know in case they were interested. There has not been many chances to see meteors since last fall ( or at least many good ones ) and with no moon it is perfect conditions for meteor watching:

April 22, 2012 Lyrids
The Lyrid meteors – April’s “shooting stars” – tend to be bright and often leave trails. About 10-20 meteors per hour at peak can be expected. Plus, the Lyrids are known for uncommon surges that can sometimes bring the rate up to 100 per hour. Those rare outbursts are not easy to predict, but they’re one of the reasons the tantalizing Lyrids are worth checking out. The radiant for this shower is in the constellation Lyra, which rises in the northeast at about 10 p.m. Fortunately, in 2012, the new moon guarantees a dark sky in the late night and morning hours, the best time to watch the Lyrid shower. As a general rule, the greatest number of Lyrid meteors fall in the dark hours before dawn. The optimal night will probably be from late night April 21 until dawn April 22, though the night before or after (April 21/22 and April 22/23) may also offer a sprinkling of Lyrid meteors. With no moon to obscure this year’s display, we are assured of dark skies for the 2012 Lyrid meteor shower! ( http://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/earthskys-meteor-shower-guide)

..so get a couple of blankets, a comfy chair, beer and go take a look..(I find beer goggles make the meteor showers appear more attractive)

Solar Light Fiesta..or Nightesca

Solar light survival. Of the brightest kind. So, every year it seems we buy 2-3 new solar lights..and by the end of the year we have 2-3 that still work of the gaggle of lights you see here…while out shoping the other day I noticed some inexpensive rechargable batteries so I bought a bunch and replaced the lights that did not work. First we needed to determine which ones still actually worked.
image

Then replace the offending lights and set them back up…

..and now we wait for dark..I love the dark, that is where I look like Clarke Kent. hehe
