Planning and Beginning Spring Cleanup

Well..seeing as how winter is over we started to make some plans for…things. It is not such a focused plan which covers all of the variables for 1 project..but it is a first attempt at MANY projects. If you take a look at these and they make sense please let me know because now that I am looking at the ‘plans’ (hehe) they seem…confusing..

Sauna tubes locations for deck:

Installation of ALL our PV Panels:

..and one of the plans was to put the screens back in the windows prior to blackfly season starting..mission accomplished!:

Excavation and stump removal:

Outside location of speakers in the eaves of the house ( which I am confused by):

Actual stereo wiring for outside and inside speakers:

Around the house excavation:

We are trying to get some things planned so when we have someone in to give us an estimate for excavation work we have something to go off of…cause I ain’t removing all those stumps by hand! hehe

Thick and Thin Windows

Bulky winter wear…
image

..becomes form fitting..THANKS SPRING! hehe..
image

These windows were taken out of an industrial building..they are 6 years old, double pane aluminum windows and were given to me by a neighbor..man they are in great shape! We are going to put putting them into the shed but it is too bad we did not have them 4 years ago as I think they would have looked great in the house!

Going to frame them in in a month or 2 and insert them..they will really look great. This also officially reopens the shed/bunkie conversion…reopens does not mean it will be done it just means the shed is not just a shed but a potential bunkie…again.

End of Year for Chopping Wood!

We are really hoping that this is it for the wood until the fall..it is such a magical time of year between the time when woodburning ends and before blackfly season begins (usually lasts about 3 days hehe). I held off on getting a wooden handled maul and settled on a free replacement..you can’t argue with the free(kin) price thats for sure! groan.

image

image

…by all accounts I think we have enough wood to last us until after next woodburning season ( so read next April)..and that is not even counting the cord-cord.5 (hehe) that we cut last week. We might have enough but we are going to clear out the wood and chunk the remaining stuff we cut down so that we don’t have to deal with it during black fly season which is scheduled to start any day now..I can tell because last night the spring peepers started chirping….and Loki started barking at them. Whenever she barks in the middle of the night I get up and flash a flashlight on the coop to see if something has finally decided to sneak attack the chickens..last night she started barking 3 times and I realized Loki has never really heard ( being a former city dog) spring peepers before so the noise was foreign to her. Hopefully tonight will go a little better.

They Don’t Make Them…

..like they used to. Dang, this is the 2nd maul I have broken in 3 years..I am only splitting around 4 cord a year too for the love of frink!
image

the fiberglass snaps at the head..good thing that it did not happen mid swing…could have done some real damage.

image

A* celebrates the end of the splitting for the day..we have enough for 2-3 days but I need to get something ( else ) more reliable. The maul has a 5 year warranty so it won’t cost anything to replace..but I want one with a wood handle and I think I have a maul head in the shed.

Ready to Remove Stumps

Some old shots of the summer in the same area..it is hard to actually believe the trees and other things were green!
image

image

..and a last week.
image

Then onto our last burn for the area! Yes! ..now only 2 more areas to burn!

image

image
…so all ready to remove the stumps..sometime. this is basically the 3rd are we have cleared in preparation for getting a backhoe in to do some work..we were hoping to get a garden in this year…but then the weather changed..again:

image..and after 10cm of snow we were not thinking about gardening anymore..we were crying, hehe

Beginning of Tentative Coop Area

Cleaned out behind the shed for the beginning of the temporary coop..we don’t mind the chickens out when we are home but when we are not here they have been into everything..so we are planning out an area for them and sealing off part of it to break the chickens in..
image

This orange temporary fencing idea I stole from another blog and it works great for chickens..not so much for predators…or dogs as Loki sprinted through it when we first put it up..it did not slow her down..right through it.

image

..on day 1 with the fencing up I watched a hen walk back and forth between the shed and the coop. It was a slow day..hehe
image

..and once again my post text was gone..odd stuff going on here. Might be something with my phone as I am on the laptop now..odd. It sure ain’t purdy but it works until we have it all figured out..and put the other side on.

Encouraging Egg Thieves

..what the frink? WHere the hell did my writeup go?..lets try again:

Was out cleaning behind the shed and while at it I noticed something inside some old kitchen cupboards..it was 3 eggs. It must have been while Ma hen was broody and was still in the coop..the chickens could not all get in to lay eggs so some of them ( or one ) must have took matters into their own hands and found a new place..but we had no way of knowing for sure how old the eggs were…so rather than throw them away I left them as offerings to the local raven population.

image

..I tried a similar experiment a couple of years ago trying to lure in a crow or 2..and ended up with 30 crows visiting every morning..so this will be the last experiment as I don’t want ravens hanging around during chick season…and just so I get it I also changed the location of the trail-camera temporarily..don’t hold your breath waiting for those shots as I only upload every 6 months or so..hehe
