A Warm Featherbed

If my camera was better(and I was a better photographer) this would have been an amazing shot..or at least not blurry. I am starting to obsess.

One of the chicks beds down for the eve on top of Ma hen.image

We leave Ma and the chicks to roam during the day and keep the rest penned up for the most part. Not that Ma has a problem chasing them all away when they get too close..she even chases Loki as Loki sprints by on her way to one of the locations Loki has seen a squirrel in at one point. Loki started with one place she would sit and wait for a squirrel to re-appear in..she would sit there for hours…as she has seen more squirrels in different locations over time she is always running from one place to the next to see if a squirrel has shown up again..run to location..wait 1 minute..onto the next..at least Ma attacking her breaks up Lokis monotomy.

..on a stormy night.

Hoder Hoder

hoder (the chick with the semi-squished head) seems to have bounced all the way back after Ma accidentally nearly killed it a couple of weeks ago..it all seems fine but this little guy (the yellow one) has an independent streak..and will leave the others to go back to the brooder coop to eat feed ( when I let them outside their pen)

image

..although hoder does seem much smaller than the rest..and I actually suspect that 3 of the 4 chicks are roosters..which is not what I was looking for..we were thinking of eating ‘Red’ the rooster but he has such a great temperment I am reluctant..we will wait a couple of weeks and see..I am not really looking forward to butchering him either so we will see.

image

..and while not on topic. I was reading a book and it presented the reader with this picture/art ( of something we have all seen many times )..do you know what it is?

Roadwork?

Out hiking on the loop today and it appears that there is some improvements being made to the road that was part of our old road/driveway..it could use some improving..it would take us 9 minutes to get out to the actual road (4 during winter) when we had to go in and out that way.
image

And another part of the old driveway is dry..and this is the first time in 5 years this spot has been dry. I was actually shocked.

image

And with the dried up area comes some deer tracks, looks like a big one.

Book Clearance

..even with my kindle readers we seem to keep amassing books..if amassing is a word. A local 2nd hand bookstore has an amazing selection and with a $2 price tag it makes them hard to pass-up..so out with the read and in with the new..

image
..or we start refilling with the 2 massive boxes of books in the attic..the other keepers.
image

Once we actually put up our other brackets we should have ample room…for more clutter. Hehe..we have a pack-rat mentallity but have space issues but we have gotten much better than when we had a house that was 3 times bigger with a double shed.

Free Tree from Cake

These shots were all too terrible so I am adding one more of me and the tree that a friend took with his superior camera..with the actual winner..story to follow:
————————————

Crossed Radiohead off my ‘bands I want to see before I die’ list..the day before the stage collapsed in Toronto..they said the person who died was crushed..which would be easy with the number of hanging automated screens above the stage.Sad. image

..some art/vandalism around town…
image

And then a friend and I got another suprise..Cake ( another band from my list) was playing in Vermont so we cruised over to see them. For the last 5 years they give away a tree at each concert to whomever can guess what type of tree it is…

image
NO…IT IS NOT A CHERRY TREE…sadly it was a plum..but my friends assured me that even if I had guessed correctly I would not have gotten the tree through the border..let alone the plane ride home..the brightside is that the tree can also be tracked via the cake website along with the other trees Cake have given away..neat conservation idea from a great band. I need to get one..bad. Great show in a beautiful fairground..vermont is a pretty state.
image sorry for the terrible shots too..they had beer at the concerts.

hoder?

Not sure if anyone out there is a ‘Game of Thrones’ fan..but A* and I are..and it was easy to give one of the chicks the name of ‘hoder’ after what happened on the weekend. Ma and her chicks were out in the yard and A* scared them accidentally..and when she did Ma jumped and came down on the little yellow chicks head..we thought he was a goner for sure. He was flopping all around and finally had some spasms and laid still..and Ma walked away leaving him to die..A* and I watched this up until the point where Ma walked away..then we sprung into action…the little guy was bleeding a little from the right eye a little but unmoving so I took him inside, put him in a small container and put a lightbulp on him for heat. For about 2 hours he just huddled and could not open his eyes..not moving the whole time…4 hours later there did not seem to be much improvement and it was near dark so A* took him back out to put him under Ma for the night. A* and I gave ‘hoder’ a 7% chance to make it through the night..or to survive at all.

Well, the next morning came and ‘hoder’ was still alive but still seemed quite dazed and could not open his eyes..a little slow..which is normal ( I would think) when you have your head crushed…so we named him after the mentally challenged character from ‘Game of Thrones’ (Hoder(Hoder,HODOR,HOODOOOOR))..we had to leave for the day and we gave him a 15% chance to survive until the evening..

image

The evening came and hoder seemed to show improvements..one eye open and the other swelled shut..but more movement and not just sitting in one place and also was chirping.

image

..and if you look close you can see the swollen right eye.

image

I was not sure if things would keep improving so I did not post up..but it has been 2 more days and hoder has both eyes open, is eating and drinking and seems to be getting back to normal(ish)..still a little slow but now seems to be doing much the same as the other chicks..but chirps more..we give hoder a 82% chance of a full recovery now..Oh the drama of only having 4 chicks..if we had 20-30 chicks I am not sure I would have spent any time trying to save the chick but I am glad we did…so far.

image

And some summer’y shots of the stillwater area..the ferns make things look really pretty.

A* inspects the water leve..and the beavers are gone..not sure if it was natural or gun-induced but they are gone..the dam seems to have settled somewhat and the water level has been dropping..too bad but what can ya do!

One of these things…

3rd time we have found one of these eggs with a transparent, semi-hard shell..we give them enough calcium (I think)..it is the 3rd time in 8 months..looks like some research is needed.

image

..it is sorta like that experiment I did in grade school where you set an egg in a vinegar filled jar for a month and the shell turns rubbery while maintaining the shape. Squishy and easily crushed..makes me wonder how it came out intact.
