Lovin Winter Commuting

Nothing says fun like waiting for the bus in the dark @ 6:30am…but then again this could also be 6:30pm. Nope.. I am too cranky for 6:30pm, it must be morning. Yay..snow…now we are really havin fun. Crappy shot for a crappy day..at least it is Friday.

..me and the bus driver have a routine worked out now..I flash a flashlight and he doesn’t drive by me..( waiting 5 minutes in the cold for the bus is better than waiting an hour for the next bus after the bus has driven by you (for those keeping score at home)..but at least on the next run the sun is up so I don’t need the flashlight.)

Keep On Movin

..no, A* did not put the winter tires on, I did…but this was a better photo op. Winter is officially on the way..I can tell by the way our car now has winter tires on…sort of like a self fulfilling prophecy…sorta.

image

..some late bloomin plants..with a beautiful backdrop of levelled off manure ( where the woodpile we burned was living)

image

..and with winter on the way that meant the end of camper season..so our friends dropped off their trailer for winter storage and we moved the Boler thanks to our new brake lines on the truck as well as a new trailer hitch..which will probably never be coming off the truck due to rust and having to sledgehammer it in.

image

image

..and just for good measure a couple of action shots..we always wear the same work-clothes when we are outside…for those at home who might think we get all this stuff done in one day…A* looks filthy…white is not the best choice for hard labor. A* is doing her ‘tough rock’ impression and I am doing my ‘Bo Duke’ impression…it took 25 shots to get it right..it is really tiring running, jumping and sliding accross a truck hood with heavy boots on.

That’s a Wrap

Vapor barrier..it is just like duct tape for us here..here is a picture of the wood wrapped up to keep it dry and close for when we start burning hardwood..
image

And we had a winter issue to deal with..the chickens have an inside run with an outdoor area..but we always worry about them being cold..so we took part of the ‘chick’ pen from the summer, wrapped it with vapor barrier, put it in a sunny spot and attached a roof..then an access to the pen…so the chickens now have a sunroom which should be nice and warm on sunny days..and they can go in and out as they like.

image

..some future enhancements…a better roof area to prevent water from pooling and moving the waterer in so it does not freeze in the winter…soon.

image

Chickie does not seem to understand that it is actually warmer inside the sunroom!

Stack, Rake n’ Burn

Bought some wood stacking end pieces..slide a couple of 2x4s in, a couple shorter ones on the ends and stack away.image

…by the time it was full it stacked around 1/2 cord of wood..we took extra precautions and covered it with vapor barrier too..this was all hardwood so now we can get to the softwood which was originally under this hardwood. Softwood until December then onto hardwood for the most wintery part of winter.

image

…and we did some more manure moving (another load was dropped off today), rock hauling and burning of some old hardwood floor a friend had brought out to get rid of. We rock picked out some of the cleared area and moved the rocks up to the grassy area rock retaining wall..heavy work.

image

..and a picture of A* contributing to the work…the manure is 2-3 ft deep in places now so it will be interesting to see how much it reduces next year.

Storage

The shed was a mess…again. Even when organized it is a mess. Never enough room…so we used up some of the excess height and built a rapid-crap shelfing unit from 2x4s and junk wood.

image

..needs more bracing but it was a simple job..makes me wonder why we did not do something earlier. We had grand ideas for the shed but the reality is that the shed is really good as a shed so instead of trying to plan windows and woodstoves for a bunkie conversion we opted for more storage space for our shed and more open floorspace.

image

Much easier to get at feed and tools too. Now, onto (eventially) filling the walls with shelves..for our shed, not our future bunkie.

Things Are Heating Up!

Knocking off tasks! Had a guy in yesterday to run some new brakelines and got the truck moving again. He was a mobile mechanic and came out and did the work where the truck was sitting..worked out perfectly so now we have our truck ready for winter and with the truck moved we have an area to chop wood again..which we started doing again today.

image

Cleaned the stove inside..all ashes and buildup from last year removed.

image

Outside for a 15 minutes pipe cleaning…

image

Then onto starting a fire..usually its been quite cold by now and we have been itching to start the fire not this year…it has been quite warm.

image

A* started the winter cooking season by soaking beans which we then slow-baked overnight (and I just finished having them for breakfast..delicious!)..and it was nice having a roaring fire again..welcome to the next 6 months of chores woodstove.

image

The outside of the woodstove could use a cleaning too.
