Winter Wood

..not that I want to curse things and get craploads of snow or anything..but it has been a fairly warm ( for the area ) and snow free winter so far. There, I said it. Let it be shown that in no way, shape or form am I complaining about the lack of both cold temperatures and ice based demondry ( aka snow). As a result the woodpile seems to be stacking up well against the elements..yes the pun was intended. We are roughly 1/2 way through the wood burning season and are nowhere near the 1/2 way point in wood usage..which might be a problem come end of wood burning season as we have plans for the area where the wood is actually stacked now ( not the picture, the rest of the wood bank on the side of the house)..but then again, I will take the warm(er) temperatures any day of the week..we can always move the unused pile to the new wood area further from the house.

..and for the record there HAS been storms but followed by warmer weather and rain.

Banking Wood in Perfect Weather

..no bugs, rain or heat..a good time to cut split and stack the wood up near the house. The final 2 cords are done, now it is only a matter of burning it!

End of Year for Chopping Wood!

We are really hoping that this is it for the wood until the fall..it is such a magical time of year between the time when woodburning ends and before blackfly season begins (usually lasts about 3 days hehe). I held off on getting a wooden handled maul and settled on a free replacement..you can’t argue with the free(kin) price thats for sure! groan.

…by all accounts I think we have enough wood to last us until after next woodburning season ( so read next April)..and that is not even counting the cord-cord.5 (hehe) that we cut last week. We might have enough but we are going to clear out the wood and chunk the remaining stuff we cut down so that we don’t have to deal with it during black fly season which is scheduled to start any day now..I can tell because last night the spring peepers started chirping….and Loki started barking at them. Whenever she barks in the middle of the night I get up and flash a flashlight on the coop to see if something has finally decided to sneak attack the chickens..last night she started barking 3 times and I realized Loki has never really heard ( being a former city dog) spring peepers before so the noise was foreign to her. Hopefully tonight will go a little better.

They Don’t Make Them…

..like they used to. Dang, this is the 2nd maul I have broken in 3 years..I am only splitting around 4 cord a year too for the love of frink!
image

the fiberglass snaps at the head..good thing that it did not happen mid swing…could have done some real damage.

A* celebrates the end of the splitting for the day..we have enough for 2-3 days but I need to get something ( else ) more reliable. The maul has a 5 year warranty so it won’t cost anything to replace..but I want one with a wood handle and I think I have a maul head in the shed.

Comparisons are never fair..

Spent the night at my sisters place last night..5 months ago she got a woodstove installed..wow it is a beauty. It can take some massive logs too which is really nice. We love the cookstove but not having to feed the stove constantly is nice..plus we need to resplit most log pieces to get them into our little cookstove..and this stove PUMPS out the heat as well..shocking really. I have woodstove envy now. image

Yay, dry wood!

It is nice to have dry wood this year..we are onto week 2 of hardwood and we have noticed an increase in temperature between hardwood and softwood that we burned earlier in the season. With some of this hardwood is mixed some softwood from year 1 cutting on the property….and it seems too light and partially rotten..not optimal for burning so it makes me wonder about the lifespan of the already cut and remaining softwood we have chunked up..but work is done for today so no sense in overthinking it..

3 Hour Swing

In temperature..not a swing like a tire swing. Trying to capture some info on my highly technical gear. Below 0 most of the day and we are still burning softwood..want to see the difference it makes on a similar weather day when burning hardwood. The pictures are 1st – hometime, 2nd – outside, 3rd – inside after 3 hours. The upper 3 are c and the lower are f ( for those (me included) who are f to c ignant. Yes I spelled ignorant wrong. Hehe.

Handmedowns

..birthday time! Not really big on gifts but Ma has some heirloom pieces from when she grew up and she gave me the cast iron humidifier. No, heirloom does not mean we can plant it and the kettle will grow a kettle tree or anything..Mom grew up using this as her mother had..funny thing about the humidifier/kettle..I once saw my grandmother pour a beer in it that my father was trying to get her to drink (she does not drink the devils ale) when I was 10..ah the memories..

The bellows I am considering it a gift but I liberated it from my brother last year..it was our bellows growing up and he ended up with it and did not use it. I did ask him but he had it as decoration and I wanted to use it. I wonder how many fires I started with this bellows growing up? The bellows ia getting fairly ratty so I might look to get some work done to it or try my hand myself (but this is one project I would not want to ruin).

Oh, and we repositioned the panels temporarily too until I grab some longer wire for the array to the charge controller. The tree shadows are worse than I thought and are the root cause of the battery issues. We moved them about 30 feet out but need 40 more and I want some thicker gauge wiring to go with it at the same time in preparation for more panels. With the sun issues one silver lining is that we now know where ALL of the solar panels will be installed next year on a pole mount system.

Stupid Stapler

Disappering staplers. Gone. We are not going to be burning this wood this season but rather than take chances I covered it over with some even thicker vapor barrier. Just enough for the tops really..and we put some hay down on the garden boxes and used some more vapor barrier over top. Just enough to keep some of the cold out. Now that we are all done the stapler will proabably show up now..someplace obvious too that is gonna drive me crazy..like attached to my car keys..I hope not.

Yearly Propane and Winter Solar Panel Repositioning

..we don’t like paying bills but we do like hot water so we topped off our tanks before winter. I was last November when we last got our propane delivered. 2 people for 1 year and basically 2 months of spot starts in april/may and october for our propane wall heater. Sweet..we have upped our usage every year so far..year 1 we basically did not use the heater at all and the top off was under $30..I thought there was a problem that year when the guy started filling the tank then stopped all within 1 sentence as we chatted.

The solar panels needed a winter adjustment for an optimal gain to compensate for the lowered angle of the solar elipsis(.sounds like too technical an explanation for putting a 6×6 board under our homemade stand.hehe) . Once I have more trees down I will finalize the location of the stand too..It is getting too much shade where it is but I am on the fence if I should just move it or cut down the offending trees..soon.

In some other snapshots – Jango and Loki share a chew toy and do their best ‘Lady and the Tramp’ meets ‘Freaky Friday’ impression..this is one of their friendly inside quiet games and the other inside friendly quiet game is to try to bite each others teeth while barking incessantly ( which loki does from partially underneath our bed) – A* teaches the chickens to fly ( she is working at a grocery store giveaway where they are throwing live chickens out of a helicopter and she wants them prepared! Hehe) – a daredevil ladybug temps fate..I am in a touque and I didn’t see any mittens on that ladybug. – darg..wrong picture but I am not going back..A* is actually feeding Hoppy and gonzo..the chicks are getting big..We see the old hens chase them less and less. (You should have seen that shot of the flying lesson!)
