Snapzooms Binocular Attachment

The other week I was messing with my binoculars and was trying to take some shots with my camera through the eyepiece.. With mixed results.  Too wobbly and hard to hold in place.  Got me thinking that there must be something online which could do something to help..

image

image

The apparatus attaches on to the eyepieces and an adjustable area designed for phone cameras allows a user to look at the (attached)  phone screen and take pictures with a greatly enhanced zoom.

image

Took about 2 minutes to get the snapzooms attachment on to the binoculars and a couple more minutes to get the phone aligned correctly ( the phone took the pictures so no pictures with the phone attached).

The before shot:

.. And the 2 shots using snapzooms:

You will need a tripod (or a beer case) to make the shot steady.. These shots were through the day to day 15×70 binoculars and they are fairly heavy so the shots were unusable due to slight movement. Before I attach the snapzooms to my 25x100s I will bring out my tripod.

More results soon.. I need to wait for some sunny days and something to take pictures of  something which is worth taking pictures of.. Not that my garbage bin is not beautiful.

Tower Power

Purchased a future project..a 50 ft windmill tower. The price was too good to pass up and even if we don’t use it right away we can stash it for later. The original owner had a 4000 watt wind turbine on the tower…he is also selling a 5000 watt Xantrex inverter…but at this point we cannot justify buying it…too much for us both in regards to output and cost.

I am having trouble getting 2 bolts off…but hopefully today or tomorrow we will finish taking it all apart and get to home…and in the future get a smaller wind turbine to augment our system’

An Obscured Crescent

..and since we were working on the door area we thought we would take things one step further. A couple of weeks ago I went onto eBay and bought something to obscure the small crescent window in our front door it’s a privacy window film..we had toyed with some curtains and I have even had cardboard up there before..but both did not really look great and either it obscured all the light or still allowed people to look in.

So, we got about 5 times more than we needed..but for $17 bucks it is not a huge deal. We cut out an area slightly bigger than the window ( roughly shaped accordingly)

image

..then once we had the rough cut we held it up to the window and used a case cutter to trim it down to the exact size we needed. Sprayed the window with some soapy water and peeled off the side which adheres to the window..

image

..no picture but it fits like a glove. An in the past you could see right in but here is the view from the outside now:

image

We went with a really base design but there are all kinds on ebay and they range in both price and size…very handy way to let in light while still being able to keep out prying eyes..or thieving eyes since we are mostly concerned with people not being able to see on the rare occasion we are both not home.

What a Waste

Been helping my mother clean out the basement of her house…we had some old equipment so we decided to get rid of it and took it to the ‘tech recycling’ place…needless to say I was shocked by the amount of outdated technology that was there…we really do live in a throwaway society and this is one of the best examples of it that I have ever seen.

image

..it is good to get rid of TV’s but replace them with books not new flat screen’s!

Power in the Bank

1/2 of the battery bank (4 of 8) were officially toast so we bit the bullet and upgraded part 1 of our power system and got some replacement batteries…AC225’s…these 6 are actually almost 2 times the capacity of our ancient trojan batteries. To make sure we keep them fully topped up we will also be installing our additional solar panels and upgrading the panel to charge controller wiring with some proper low gauge braided wiring too..over the next couple of weeks.

image

image

..been raining like a banshee around here as of late, the old beaverdam @ the stillwater cannot even be seen..higher than spring water levels…scary high.

image

image

We will keep the old batteries charged up and beside the new bank until next spring when they will move into boler for portable power…or emergencies in case anything goes awry..as they tend to do.

Bolerama

I have been using kijiji.ca to watch Boler trailer sales for years and recently A* and I started looking at some of them..and within a week of starting to look a 17ft boler popped up for sale…the 17ft model was only made for 2 years and offers an whopping 3ft in length and is a little wider..good shape for a 1979 Boler and also in good working order..so we took the plunge and bought a new travelling home away from home…we are hoping to do some extended trips so hopefully the trailer will pay for itself.

… nice little screen door to keep the bugs out.

This is the sitting area which also converts into a smaller double bed… It is not quite a double bed but it is definitely bigger than a single bed it sleeps me comfortably I am 6′ 2″.

image

This is the kitchen area a propane stove and oven a 12 volt pump water system and a propane water heater. The camper actually has more amenities then our house does.

image

image
A bed in the back and a fold down bunkbed above it..

Along the other wall is a propane fridge, furnace as well as the washroom area, complete with shower… But it is a little cramped..

image

It will also be useful in the yard as friends now have somewhere to sleep..we were always a little challenged for space in our 600sq/ft house..and 2 of my friends slept in it last night to try it out..the mini-essence of comfort…we like it!

Water Perch

We bought a rain barrel but we have not quite gotten around to installing the rain gutters…but in the meantime we will use it as a cistern for when the pump runs out. We already have a water splitter so (after a minor adjustment to the hose) we mounted the rain barrel on top of the wobbly woodpile..

image

image

So, we fill it via the hose then turn off the line inside so it does not overfill..then when our pump runs out of water the pressure in the water line is lost…so then we switch the line inside back on and the water from the rain barrel begins to flow into the inside water line..a gravity fed system. Wanted to try this out for a while..an outside cistern is out of the question for winter months but something similar to this (or this) can flush a toilet around 40 times..or wash 500 hands. A system like this could be useful for anyone in emergencies too..as long as the cistern was high enough (in this setup it is not high enough for our hot water as the heater is mounted high up).

..and some random shots of yard, Ma and her chicks and the pups on a hike around the loop.
