End of Jan Shots

..for those of you who are interested..I did have a ‘month long’ birdfeeder I made last year..it was too hard to refill..to the point where it was more of a pain in the ass to fill it then fill up the regular bird feeder every other day:

..gosh I hope the snow holds off for 4 more months!

..and some coyote scat on our loop..have not heard them very much over the month and there were not any tracks..not really shocking considering only places with no sun have any snow at all in the area.

Winter Wood

..not that I want to curse things and get craploads of snow or anything..but it has been a fairly warm ( for the area ) and snow free winter so far. There, I said it. Let it be shown that in no way, shape or form am I complaining about the lack of both cold temperatures and ice based demondry ( aka snow). As a result the woodpile seems to be stacking up well against the elements..yes the pun was intended. We are roughly 1/2 way through the wood burning season and are nowhere near the 1/2 way point in wood usage..which might be a problem come end of wood burning season as we have plans for the area where the wood is actually stacked now ( not the picture, the rest of the wood bank on the side of the house)..but then again, I will take the warm(er) temperatures any day of the week..we can always move the unused pile to the new wood area further from the house.

..and for the record there HAS been storms but followed by warmer weather and rain.

Happy News Year!

Better late than never. A* and I have not really had many NEW jobs, activities or things to do as of late and as such we don’t post much..cause there is nothing to post about which has not been said on past posts and I am not a huge fan of posting the same things over and over..so here is a post about plowing snow with the tractor..We DID have snow in December..then it all melted but now we have more snow..exciting!!

Other than this, going to work and Holiday funtimes with family things are fairly steady around these parts. Lugging wood, cutting kindling, shovelling, checking trail cameras, plowing, cutting trails through the woods..sorry to be less than exciting but such is life! Take care and Happy 2017!

Working the New Snow Implement

20160113_095530
…not the first time we got to use the tractor for snow..but this was the first time I knew what to expect! The previous 2 snowstorms I had the tractor out and was trying different things with the grader ( attached to the back of the tractor) and the front loader..with varying degrees of success..things took longer than I would like but now that I go out with a plan I can get the whole driveway done by the time A* has the deck/shed area shovelled..about ½ hour to an hour(ish). The grader works well and for the first pass ( to the end of the driveway and back) I turn the grader so it is fully angled ( like a plow) and reverse down the driveway and then back up to the house ( in reverse too)..it clears much of the snow to the side on this pass..then I turn the grader so it is perpendicular to the road and do another pass to the end of the driveway…and when the snow builds up too much in front of the grader I cut the wheel and push the pile off the cleared part of the driveway, pull back out and continue on my way.

A* and I were thinking about last year and getting our truck stuck 7 times. It took us about 14-15 hours (groan…and an one of those was a 4 hour ordeal) to dig the truck out over the span of those 7 stuck times..so far this year I have about 3 hours of snow clear on the tractor..I am hoping to spend less time on the tractor plowing the road than I did last year digging things out when I got stuck..and I am also hoping not to get the truck stuck again too….and don’t even get me started on the 1.5 months we had to use snowshoes to get into our place..we are hoping to avoid that too.

Like snow posts? Look no further.

Who likes posts about more snow!  Make it stop and I will too.

I predict May 7th for the first Spring Peeper sounds.  Depressing.

image

The good news is we are cutting way down on mowing.. The shovel is at the bottom of the snow on the frozen grass.  Still about 50cm of snow on the lawn.

image

And we dug out around the Nootka trees as the snow is really settling and weighing the limbs down.  This is more snow (as you may have noted with the same themed posts) than I thought possible for the area and had I known what it might have now done to the trees and bushes I would have wrapped or shovelled differently.  Some of the bushes seem really spread where they were normally were tightly bunched.

Truthfully it is not as bad as things seem the snowshoeing has been great too.

Snow Trek Front Crawl

image

A great day for a snowshoeing trek over to the lake.  The snow is crusty so the dogs have almost no issues breaking through to the deep snow.  Something was through the area last night ( but veered away from our property boundary. Looks like a bobcat. )

Our swimming area is not ready for the season yet (A* does the front crawl with snowshoes to demonstrate).. Nice and warm with the sun reflecting.

And our old road in has a couple of low spots..when I saw the actual ground I did not recognize it.  ‘what is the brown stuff and the dark colored snowballs?’.. Turns out it was dirt and rocks.
