Pathway Plan

A* takes a break…
image

..and plan (and work) is complete..
image
..and now how we got here..

We were out looking and trying to decide on where to put a walkway (which we are going to gravel fill for now..or soon) and as we were tracing the various outlines in fill we were digging in a couple of inches..so when we finalized the plan we put the liner in with 1/2 hour more work..it is a small walkway afterall.

No rain yet so levelling the topsoil would be a waste..as long as we get it done before fall we will be happy.

It’s a bird..it’s a plane..

..no, it’s a flashlight. I am sure some of you might recall me saying we have no power outages..well last night we had a bump. The power was low due to not getting much sun as of late and last night it shut off. My inverter shuts off power @ 65% power so it is not like we are out…I disconnected the system and checked it all over..seems like 3 of my 8 batteries have a low charge which when distributed over the 8 batteries is dragging down the overall voltage…I hooked up 4 of the 8 and we were back in business with power. The electolyte levels are fine so I am gonna recharge the 3 ( but I need an extra to make sure I have 12v (2 6v batteries in a series)) so I use a battery with a good charge too. The batteries were 6 years old when I got them so they might be on their last legs..I do have the option to shut off the 65% auto off on my inverter but that will really kill the batteries if the charge is low…that will happen if I cannot get these batteries to hold a proper charge though cause there is no sense trying to save batteries that are beyond saving

..also, I just corrected a spelling mistake after I got home off the bus and checked the post..not that I usually correct the mistakes but I had title regret…I should have had a Batman or Spiderman quote since I don’t really like Superman..who likes a superhero that needs venerablilities invented to make a story interesting..I like a superhero who has weaknesses..such as BatteryMan..low voltage and uncareful owners are his weaknesses…I think it might be the only way I ever accomplish my dream of becoming a comic super-Villian…obviously comic as in comic book but consider BatteryMan copyrighted as soon as I save this edit (just in case, hehe)..as well as any likenesses or images which COULD emerge. Hehe

Burlap’esque

..sorry..no tassles or see-through items..that is burlesque. OK so wrap..the japanese maple needs something to protect it from snow and such for its first year so we are putting it under wrap before any snow flies and the ground is still unfrozen. We drove in some corner posts then cut burlap to cover the top and wrap the sides. Then staple to attach…staple to attach…on no, I have lost my stapler, again. I spent nearly 2 hours (yes seriously..when I know something is here is drives me bonkers not being able to find it) looking for it to no avail. Drat.

Fall Delivers

..both leaves and cords of wood appear to be falling in the yard. The leaves go in as compost in the compost pile and the wood goes to the ash pile..after copious burning that is. Move and stack, move and cut, move and burn…sounds like a new dance sensation that is sweeping the nation.

Need to get it all stacked and move onto our next projects..so hard to get work done when you only have an hour of light left after getting home off the bus…if I could just cut down that hour and a half commute…

Passive Solar Heater Quick Test

..I wanted to try out the heater so I cardboared and taped a window in the house and cut around the intake for the heater..just as I got it set up and went inside it clouded over for the day..how much is the temperature supposed to go up in a house aft 21 seconds..blurg. I know of something else to fix on the new heater too..the intake should go from the back into the house via the intake and not from the top..also much bigger!

Giving a mountain ash a better life

..I found this little guy huddled under a bunch of alders I was trimming out of the overgrown ‘ditch’ out near the main road in. I could not cut him down like the rest of the doomed trees..a diamond in the rough..so I dug him out and later When the work was done I planted him in the rear side of our new flower bed from a week ago. We always had mountain ash in our yard growing up. Nice orange berries in the fall.

We all do our part for road chores. I trimmed up the ditches and some of the other folks laid down some fresh gravel..winter is coming.

Passive Solar Air Heater Ready For Lift-Off

A* and I caulked up the cans and we left it to dry overnight. I finished off the drilling of the holes on the bottom of the intake and made a middle piece for the top of the cans. The air will then enter a common area to allow the air to network before proceeding in an orderly heated fashion into the area to be heated. I did not want to complicate things so I made the combiner area bigger so I would not need to cut cans..

To assure that air only enters through my drilled holes I put on aluminum tape in all possible gaps and over the holes..it also does a great jog of covering horribly drilled holes! I then added all the cans back in and positioned them as i wanted and secured them in place with the middle piece that has the air holes drilled..securing as tight as i could get them. I also doubled up the side pieces for a tight fit so the cans had nowhere to move at all…plus it looks so cute..like a green initiative for selling diet pepsi..heat your house and stay trim too..thanks diet pepsi..groan.

I attached a too long piece of tube for the air outtake then onto painting. I used woodstove paint along with the high temperature resistant caulk..black for all visible pieces to absorb extra heat..now that the rig is flat black it looks faster doesn’t it?
image ..and the finished project. Ready for mounting..soon. A* and I were chatting too and it looks like a mini coop outside run is making its way onto the project leaderboard..so mounting and rework might be the same day..or not.

The red caulk looks like shite..I pretend the red is flames so the passive solar air heater is both fast and dangerous looking…Prototype complete.
