Happy News Year!

Better late than never. A* and I have not really had many NEW jobs, activities or things to do as of late and as such we don’t post much..cause there is nothing to post about which has not been said on past posts and I am not a huge fan of posting the same things over and over..so here is a post about plowing snow with the tractor..We DID have snow in December..then it all melted but now we have more snow..exciting!!

Other than this, going to work and Holiday funtimes with family things are fairly steady around these parts. Lugging wood, cutting kindling, shovelling, checking trail cameras, plowing, cutting trails through the woods..sorry to be less than exciting but such is life! Take care and Happy 2017!

Working the New Snow Implement

20160113_095530
…not the first time we got to use the tractor for snow..but this was the first time I knew what to expect! The previous 2 snowstorms I had the tractor out and was trying different things with the grader ( attached to the back of the tractor) and the front loader..with varying degrees of success..things took longer than I would like but now that I go out with a plan I can get the whole driveway done by the time A* has the deck/shed area shovelled..about ½ hour to an hour(ish). The grader works well and for the first pass ( to the end of the driveway and back) I turn the grader so it is fully angled ( like a plow) and reverse down the driveway and then back up to the house ( in reverse too)..it clears much of the snow to the side on this pass..then I turn the grader so it is perpendicular to the road and do another pass to the end of the driveway…and when the snow builds up too much in front of the grader I cut the wheel and push the pile off the cleared part of the driveway, pull back out and continue on my way.

A* and I were thinking about last year and getting our truck stuck 7 times. It took us about 14-15 hours (groan…and an one of those was a 4 hour ordeal) to dig the truck out over the span of those 7 stuck times..so far this year I have about 3 hours of snow clear on the tractor..I am hoping to spend less time on the tractor plowing the road than I did last year digging things out when I got stuck..and I am also hoping not to get the truck stuck again too….and don’t even get me started on the 1.5 months we had to use snowshoes to get into our place..we are hoping to avoid that too.

Like snow posts? Look no further.

Who likes posts about more snow!  Make it stop and I will too.

I predict May 7th for the first Spring Peeper sounds.  Depressing.

image

The good news is we are cutting way down on mowing.. The shovel is at the bottom of the snow on the frozen grass.  Still about 50cm of snow on the lawn.

image

And we dug out around the Nootka trees as the snow is really settling and weighing the limbs down.  This is more snow (as you may have noted with the same themed posts) than I thought possible for the area and had I known what it might have now done to the trees and bushes I would have wrapped or shovelled differently.  Some of the bushes seem really spread where they were normally were tightly bunched.

Truthfully it is not as bad as things seem the snowshoeing has been great too.

Microclimate and Imagination

image

3° up to 30°c thanks to no wind,  bright sun reflecting off the snow as well as a dug out area on the side of the house.  Sit,  close your eyes and concentrate and it almost feels like summer!

image

.. It looks like it might be a while before the truck gets in.. We are still 50 ft from the gate!

WHAT A RELIEF!

image

Thank goodness!  Another 10cm..its been a week without snow, I was beginning to worry!

image

We got to the wood pile before we got the new stuff. Nothing really beats transporting wood via a sled while  on snowshoes..ahhh, the luxury of it all!

And next years wood bank (from a last fall stacking session ).. Is there anything railway ties can’t do? (I wish they could somehow be configured to instantaneously melt all snow in a km radius)

Near the Halfway Point

image

Well..we are nearing the halfway point of wood burning..and snow but we have little of it and it is scheduled to be 11c today so the snow we have is melting away…and so is the base of snow we had on our driveway. Once we build up a good 3-4 inch base of snow the driveway is nice and smooth..but it is back into spring mess stage right now.

image

image

..the wood is holding up nicely too..SUCH a difference in heat once we switched over to buring hardwood a couple of weeks ago..burning the scrap softwood is a necessary evil but the hardwood is champ!..2.5 months to go..hopefully it will get cold again but without too much snow.

Double Coverage

Covered up the boler yesterday in preparation for a covering of snow…finally found a use for the portable garage covering that blew down a year and a half ago..we wrapped the boler up like a Christmas present but this one won’t be opened up until spring.

image

image

..we are about halfway through a snowstorm so we walked the loop…and made some snowman at various points..

image

..these snowman have a certain Halloween feel to them…hopefully they don’t scare the snowmobilers and cause them to accidentally drive off the trail.

It’s Beginning to Look A lot Like Christmas!

..not that snow was what we were looking for but it is nice for Christmas! Not sure if this is going to stick around or not but it wasn’t so deep that the car had any issues getting up the unplowed driveway..this is perfect snow-road making weather so I am about to go drive over it with the truck to beat it down in the hopes that it freezes solid tonight..then no more mud!

..and the chickens decided to stay indoors today too..not sure why..hehe

there and back again

..on some of the other blogs I subscribe to I have read of issues with security and being broken into so I did not want to post about me being away for 8 days in a sunny destination down south.

Yes..offgrid and going south. With all of the issues we had over the last month a vacation was just what the doctor ordered..so we went south and I filled up my prescription with beer, snorkelling and sun. I also wanted to go down because it would be a good chance for my 15 year old to see another side of the world that she has never seen before..the 3rd World and how it related to North American society. The resort..perfect..the beach..perfect. The surrounding areas..much different then what she was accustomed to. Where we have houses that are huge they have small simple buildings, where we have malls they have farmland and animals, where we have limitless possessions they have struggle and hard work for the basics. It’s not something she had ever really seen before and she was a little taken back..I could see the ‘..oh my God..’  look in her eyes when we entered into a city of 1.5 million that had goats grazing in the median in the middle of the city. We live in a society that takes so many things for granted it is shocking..in many ways we are a spoon fed generation. There is a saying that I always think of with J*, ‘..you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make her drink..’ and that is what I was trying to do with J*..I cannot force the fact into her head that she has everything she will ever need but I can help her open her eyes to the fact that the world is far from a perfect place.

It WAS a good reminder for A* and I too..we know our offgrid life is a challenge and sometimes we talk of doing something else but going to a place where everyone has to fight for everything they have it makes us appreciate having something modest of our own that many of them would consider a mansion. It’s not there yet but now that the holiday is over its back to a more regular schedule for work!

oh..and don’t get me wrong..the potential life lesson is an added learning bonus round..we needed the vacation more than anything else!
