Meet a Potcake: Artemis

The potcake dog is a mixed-breed dog type found on several Caribbean islands. Its name comes from the congealed peas and rice mixture that local residents traditionally eat, as the overcooked rice that cakes to the bottom of the pot would be fed to the dogs.

Loki passed in June. Very sad times but things are looking up in the dog department! Meet the new pup!

4 months with the lil critter so far. While totally different than any dog we have had, she is adorable.

We adopted her from a local shelter who brought the dogs up from the Bahamas to be rescued. Very worthwhile cause I can get with!

End of Jan Shots

..for those of you who are interested..I did have a ‘month long’ birdfeeder I made last year..it was too hard to refill..to the point where it was more of a pain in the ass to fill it then fill up the regular bird feeder every other day:

..gosh I hope the snow holds off for 4 more months!

..and some coyote scat on our loop..have not heard them very much over the month and there were not any tracks..not really shocking considering only places with no sun have any snow at all in the area.

Burt T the Grouse

image

A nightly visitor coming around for a dried cranberry treat.  Still has not eating from our hands but getting closer.  Having had chickens in the past the dogs don’t seem to care about it. The Burt T (the grouse of course) is somewhat wary of the dogs but never strays far.

Feeder Enhancements?

..it appeared the birds did not like the feeder..but after close inspection I noticed my ‘feeder holes’ were being blocked by the plastic ( which was bent upwards) around the feeder holes. Cut a couple away to free the seeds up and now the seed is flowing so the birds can get to it. Also replaced the pens with branches for a more natural look and removed the plastic mesh as it was impeding things too…but now things are flowing a little too much..but the birds like it.

Tanglewood Fly Trappings

image

A* sporting some of her summer fashion line.  A hat with a BLUE disposable cup attached and covered with enough tanglefoot (used usually to to ring the bottom of trees to prevent ant infestation) to coat the cup.  Disgusting but effective.

image

Basically walk the perimeter of the property /area or wear all day.. Usually a couple of days of treatment clears up the deer flies for a couple of weeks

Tall Beavers

image

image

.. Some mighty tall beaver’s in the area.. Or some beaver activity when the snow was still high in spring.  Seems like so long ago now that the weather is nice.

image

.. And a nice old wreck on a new path we discovered. It really amazes me how some of these cars got to their final resting places when I have a hard time just walking there

Sure Signs of Improvement

image

It is easy to tell that the weather is improving.. Loki in her usual warm weather sleeping area between bouts of squirrel patrols.

Snow Trek Front Crawl

image

A great day for a snowshoeing trek over to the lake.  The snow is crusty so the dogs have almost no issues breaking through to the deep snow.  Something was through the area last night ( but veered away from our property boundary. Looks like a bobcat. )

Our swimming area is not ready for the season yet (A* does the front crawl with snowshoes to demonstrate).. Nice and warm with the sun reflecting.

And our old road in has a couple of low spots..when I saw the actual ground I did not recognize it.  ‘what is the brown stuff and the dark colored snowballs?’.. Turns out it was dirt and rocks.
